Being a Powerful Creator

Give people who you are, not what you think they want.
Ellen Atkins

Last week as I was getting ready for my interview on, “What it means to be a Powerful Creator”, I came across this quote from a past guest and it blew me away (actually I wish I had said that ????).

“…It’s taking something that is deeply internal and personal to you and expressing it in such a profound way that it changes other people’s lives.”
– Kellie Hart Davis

Isn’t that amazing?!

I think I am learning as a creator, that what is deep inside of me needs to come out. Maybe people will need it also. Maybe they won’t. But, I need to stop spending time on what I think people want and really just share the authentic stuff that is inside of me. I mostly do that, but there are enough times I have one eye on what “I think” people want.

As I was discussing this recently with my friend, I heard myself say, “Give them who you are, not what you think they want, and then they might realize that’s what they wanted or needed.” The true gems are buried inside of me, and it’s the best I have to offer. And truly, if it only helps one person it is worth it.

Doesn’t that make sense?

I will never get there by always having one eye on “I wonder if my followers will find this helpful.” I mean there is a place for that, but my biggest responsibility is to go deep and bring out what is inside of me.

Truthfully, if I cared so much about other people’s opinions of me, I never would have created Syd. Seriously, half of them thought I had gone a little “coo coo”. My relatives! Oy vey! I probably would have just stayed nicely in Corporate and continued with life as I knew it.

But, I am not that Ellen from Corporate. I have transformed and I need to stay true to myself. The Ellen that used to worry so much about pleasing other people and doing and saying what they thought was right is no longer me. And, it is okay if I’m not for everyone. THAT has been a big shift for me. We don’t have to be for everyone, we just have to be true to our authentic selves.

By saying “yes” to Cheryl, creator of the podcast (and such an awesome person) I had so many ‘aha’ moments go off. In the prepping beforehand, while binging her podcasts, and really thinking about her signature question, what it really means to be a powerful creator, and of course in the interview. I have realized that the “yes” we say to interviews, etc., are as much for our internal growth as they are for the benefit of the company or whatever we are trying to promote. The “yes” is for you!

So I think these next few months will be going deep and sharing from solely what is coming up.
