Miles Hamm, an avid Syd fan and our first #SuburbanMonk Ambassador, has returned from his 5-month voyage on the Viking Sun to share a special blog post about what it means to be a father.

The special part of being a father–actually stepfather–to two 24-year-old twin girls (Samantha and Savannah), has been the joy of watching them grow into successful and independent young women.

I have been a part of their lives since they were five years old. I was never a helicopter parent but tried to provide them with varied experiences and ideas throughout their lives. I’m most proud of teaching them the benefits of reading and a love for travel which they both still enjoy. (And do a lot of!) They lost their mother at a very young age and I hopefully have been successful in getting them through some very tough years. I’m very proud of who they are and what they have achieved so far! Now, I am a support whenever they need it, but have let them live their own lives without a lot of parental interference. You girls ROCK!

I also have been lucky enough to have developed a relationship with Wispy’s son, Jeff. He also lost his father, so I have tried to be there for him if and when he needs some advice or direction. He too is thriving and it’s a pleasure to see him doing so well

Give them love, ideas, freedom, support, knowledge of right from wrong, varied experiences and education, then turn them loose to live the life they choose to live. Stand back and let them amaze you!

Happy Father’s day to all!

How do you honor your father?

Please share. I could discuss these things all day.
